Why It's Important to Shop Outside Your Comfort Zone

As a Personal Stylist I’m supposed to push my clients outside of their comfort zone. It’s something that comes with the job because a lot of times, we tend to get stuck and you need to have someone unstick you. As I am only human, I also get stuck from time to time. Thankfully, I have the wherewithal to understand when that happens and quickly get myself unstuck.

Style & Lipstick Shop Outside Your Comfort Zone

This week was one of those occasions. I have had an eyeopening experience that for most, is not that big of a deal but for me, has been a profound epiphany into how I think, and how many of us may think. It has to do with my recent discovery that I can fit into a brand that I was sure I could not fit into.

I think it speaks to my own confidence in a way that is very subtle. I consider myself to be very confident but sometimes, when it comes to what and where I shop, I think I’m a little shaky. It’s almost a lack mentality that keeps me from trying some brands. Maybe it’s a fear of not fitting and the sense of rejection and frustration that comes from that. I try my best not to tie my self worth to garments when shopping, and for the most part I’m successful. Admittedly, there are some brands that I have just given up on because it seems they don’t want to be size inclusive. C’est la vie.

This experience has been a lesson learned. When I investigated Express (the aforementioned brand) and actually looked at their size chart, I was cautiously optimistic that they would fit me. So I placed an order. And I was pleasantly surprised when things fit. I’m really happy that more and more retailers are increasing their size offerings. It would be great if Express would extend sizing even further and become even more accessible. I certainly will continue trying them and letting them know what works and what doesn’t.

It’s important to remember, just because it fits it doesn’t mean it looks good. But that also doesn’t mean I’m less of a person, it simply means I need to try something else - and the same holds true for you. I know it’s going to be hit or miss due to fabrics and construction but it’s still nice to have Express as an option. Especially because they excel at work wear, event dresses, and basics. So I am very excited to continue to explore what Express has to offer.
