Spicy Bloody Mary

One of my favorite things to do is to have brunch on the weekends or while on vacation, and nothing says brunch like a Bloody Mary.  I personally prefer it to be on the spicy side, so I’ve developed this concoction; it was inspired by a Spicy Bloody Mary that I tried at Lola, in Seattle.  I love the idea of using fresh herbs in this cocktail, and with the minced jalapeño it has a lovely kick.  The addition of lemon and lime juices serve to brighten the tomato; and of course, olives are a must in this recipe, I use jalapeño garlic stuffed olives to amp up the spice.  I opted not to salt the rim of the glass but you can definitely do that.  I find using a chili sea salt to rim with is fantastic with this recipe!  This is a great accompaniment to a smoky frittata or even basic scrambled eggs and bacon. I’d love to know what’s your favorite libation at brunch? 1/4 c. fresh lemon juice 1/3 c. fresh lime juice 3 c. tomato juice 1 jalapeño, finely minced 1 large clove of garlic, grated using a microplane 1 tsp. rosemary, finely minced Tabasco (or any hot sauce) to taste 3 shakes Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp. prepared horseradish 1 tbs. coarsely ground black pepper Salt to taste Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher.  Using an immersion blender (or you can use a blender or food processor), blend the ingredients until fully combined.  Pour 2 ounces of vodka into a glass filled with ice, top with the Spicy Bloody Mary mix.  Garnish with rosemary and olives and enjoy…

You know you’re destined to be a fashion designer if you: a) spent most of your childhood making clothes for your Barbie dolls instead of playing with your friends; b) read fashion magazines instead of your school books; c) ran a boutique out of your basement at age 10. In other words: if you want to be the next Yves Saint Laurent, it helps to be completely and utterly obsessed with fashion. However, there are many aspects of the profession. Working as a fashion designer can just as well mean supervising a design team at a sportswear company as producing a label under your own name. Although the former career may not seem as glamorous as the latter, it certainly will make your life less stressful. To create your own label takes a lot of time, dedication and hard work. Not to mention living just above the poverty line for several years. This is Heading Three However, most people find that the best foundation for a design career is to get a fine arts degree in fashion at a prestigious school. Besides teaching you the craft, a good school will also add credibility to your resumÈ. “We live in a brandname society, and having the name of a good school behind you really does help,” says Carol Mongo, Director of the Fashion Department at Parsons School of Design in Paris. There are as many different ways to embark upon a fashion career as there are styles of design. Ralph Lauren’s Polo empire was founded on a small tie collection that he sold to Bloomingdales. Helmut Lang decided to open his own clothing store when he couldn’t find a t-shirt that he liked. Michael Kors built up a network of customers by selling clothes in a trendy…

Sometimes being a friend means mastering the art of timing. There is a time for silence. A time to let go and allow people to hurl themselves into their own destiny. And a time to prepare to pick up the pieces when it's all over.

10 Things: May Favorites

There are certain things I tend to gravitate to, and it changes frequently.  I thought I’d share a few of my favorite beauty products.  If you’d like more detail on these items, check it out on my You Tube channel:  10 Things: May Favorites Clockwise from the top: Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette:  Buttery, highly pigmented, all matte eye shadow palette.  Extremely versatile. Sephora Instant Nail Polish Remover:  Removes nail polish so quick.  Fastest removal ever.  Seriously. Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream:  I mix this with the Cover FX drops.  Alone, too dewy for me.  Together, amazing coverage. #Instamarc Light Filtering Contour Powder:  This is a highlight/contour duo.  So finely milled, the banana powder sets concealer like a dream.  The contour powder – OMG.  That is all. Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick:  These go on like water and dry to a matte finish.  I recommend using a lip balm underneath.  Colors shown are L.U.V. which is such a gorgeous purple, and Bauhau5 a lovely raspberry pink. Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer:  Best concealer on the market, it doesn’t crease or settle into fine lines and provides great coverage.  I prefer to apply with a damp Beauty Blender. MAC Prep + Prime Highlighter in Light Boost:  Mixed with the UD Naked Skin concealer, it’s a match made in heaven. Cover FX Custom Cover Drops:  Combined with the Bare Minerals gel cream, it creates a lovely satin matte finish on the skin.  You can customize your coverage by adding 1 – 4 drops, 1 being light coverage and 4 being full coverage.  Great to adjust any foundations that are not quite the right shade, too. NARS Ita Kabuki Brush:  Best contouring brush…

NARS Audacious Lipstick

I love lipstick. And I have a lot of them. It’s really no surprise, this is why I included lipstick in my blog title, lol. I’ve tried some really good ones, some really not so good ones, and everything in between. NARS Audacious lipsticks are, by far, the best of the bunch. They go on so smoothly; literally, just one swipe and that’s all you need. The formula is outstanding; light, velvety, and semi matte, they make my lips look amazing. They aren’t heavy on the lips and they have pretty good staying power. Now, the lipstick will transfer but they tend to stain so color will remain on your lips. The packaging is sleek and feels great in the hand. It’s a soft matte black with contrasting gloss lettering. What I love most, though, is the fact that the lid is magnetic. When you open it and close it, it has the most satisfying click as the magnet closes. I know, it’s weird that something like that would make an impression, but I’ve found myself sitting at my desk opening the lid and letting it click closed while I contemplate an email (probably annoying the crap out of my colleagues). The bullet has NARS embossed in it, which, to me, is the mark of a truly high end lipstick. When I bought my first one, I figured, that’s all I really needed. 9 lipsticks later and I want all of them. There are 40 shades, by the way; 30 shades are available everywhere, there are 10 exclusive shades that can be purchased at the NARS website or locations, and Barney’s New York. At $32 a pop, it’s a hefty investment, but they are well worth the price…
