Chicken Tortilla Soup

I love soup on chilly nights and this one is by far, one of my favorites.  The avocado takes the soup to a whole new level – the creamy, buttery texture is a good contrast to the heat from the serrano peppers. This soup is pretty low calorie and while the addition of tortilla chips in the cooking adds carbs, it also serves to thicken the soup a little.  What really makes this soup hearty is the rotisserie chicken, although you can omit it if you’d like.  You can also make this vegetarian by substituting the chicken broth for vegetable broth.  Speaking of broth, I usually use chicken stock concentrate – it’s a great shortcut and allows you to make exactly the amount of broth you need for any recipe.  Just know, you can be your own cook and modify the recipe to suit your taste.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Ingredients: 1/8 c. chili powder 1 tbs ground cumin 4 tomatoes, diced 2 – 3 serrano peppers, sliced 3 cloves of garlic, minced 1 med onion, diced vegetable oil 3/4 c. crushed tortilla chips, or 3 corn tortillas, cut into squares 8 c. chicken broth 1 tsp. kosher salt 1 rotisserie chicken, skinned, deboned, and diced juice of 1/2 of a lime 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped Additions: sliced avocado monterrey jack cheese sour cream or crema tortilla chips Saute onions, garlic, and peppers in olive oil until onions are translucent.  Add dry spices and cook for about a minute or enough to remove the rawness of the spices.  Add the tomatoes and saute until softened, about 3 minutes.  Add tortilla chips (or tortillas), broth, and salt.  Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 45…

Glamglow Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment

In my quest to find the perfect mask I decided to try the Glamglow Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment.  When it comes to masks like this, I prefer using a flat foundation brush; I’m not a fan of using my fingers.  The brush gives me better control and keeps me from grabbing too much product. The Thirstymud mask tingled and I could feel it pulling the blood to the surface of my skin but it wasn’t uncomfortable. The overall effect was quite refreshing and once I rinsed it off, my skin felt really hydrated and pretty good!  Unlike the Sephora sheet mask, I didn’t have sticky residue to contend with, or any of the fussing with the mask. I’m very pleased with the outcome of the Glamglow Thirstymud mask; my skin felt clean, fresh, and soft, plus I liked the glow it left behind.  This one is a bit pricy but it’s worth the investment…

Day to Night Dressing

When I saw this dress on the Ann Taylor website, I knew I had to have it.  The beautiful lace inset is so pretty, I couldn’t resist.  When it arrived, and I felt how comfortable the dress is, I knew it’s going to be one of my favorites!  This dress is a great day to night option.  Bonus is that it’s available up to a size 18.  Also, I’m obsessed with these shoes from Christian Louboutin.  They’re the perfect mix of edgy and sophisticated and can carry this dress from day to night…

My Favorite 10 (or maybe 12) Fall Lipsticks

Fall is the time of year where deeper colors are the norm and it’s really when I have the most fun with lipstick.  You’re probably going to note that a lot of the colors are similar, and I acknowledge that.  Why I’ve chosen to include them is because the finishes are different (I would like to add that for any of the liquid lipsticks noted below, if you have dry lips, use a bit of lip balm underneath them – it’ll make them much less drying).  For those of you who are makeup junkies like me, we know the differences and appreciate them for what they are.  In this collection, you have a selection of matte, ultra matte, satin, or something with a little shine.  Enjoy! ColourPop Ultra Matte Lipstick in Avenue:  This deep red is a liquid lipstick from ColourPop and is an amazing deal for only $6.00.  It absolutely doesn’t transfer and is a knockout matte red for fall. Nars Audacious Lipstick in Dominique:  This muted, grayed down lilac is a different spin on the nude lip, (and the purple lip too).  It has a satin finish that feels like silk on the lips.  This color is exclusive to either the Nars website or Barney’s New York. ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip in LAX:  Another liquid lipstick from Colourpop, this is a deep vampy color that packs a lot of drama but is completely wearable for a night out this upcoming fall season. Too Faced Melted Liquid Lipstick in Melted Fig:  This lip color is a muted pink/purple shade that is unique yet very wearable.  It’s an orchid like color with muted purple tones that makes it a perfect color for fall. Sephora Collection Pearl Sheet Mask

Lately I’ve been very focused on skin care and as such, I’ve begun incorporating masks into my regimen.  I tried the Sephora Collection Pearl Sheet Mask because I was curious to see how sheet masks work.   The instructions state to place the sheet mask on your face and wait for 15 minutes.  Once you remove the mask there’s no need to rinse, just massage the remaining product into your skin and you’re done.  I found it dripped down my neck while I waited, and it moved around quite a lot, even when sitting still (I spent a good 10 minutes fussing about, trying to get a good image).  I thought maybe if I lay down, it would help but then the liquid in the mask started dripping into my hair.  I settled on leaning back and waiting the remaining 5 minutes while I adjusted the sheet mask around my eyes, nose, and lips. I have to be honest, I’m not sure I’m a fan – placing a cold, wet, sheet mask onto my face was, well, cold and wet and not very pleasant to me.  When I looked at myself in the mirror I jumped, what I found staring back at me was a wet and drippy imitation of Jason from the Friday the 13th movies.  I had full intent to include an image of me wearing the sheet mask, but try as I might, I couldn’t get a good picture that wouldn’t scare small children. Once my wait was over I took the sheet mask off and massaged the remaining product into my skin.  Initially, it left a bit of a sticky residue, but that quickly evaporated; what was left behind was very…

Pop of Red

Nothing creates impact like red does.  I’m so excited red is one of this fall’s hottest colors, although to me, it’s timeless.  Whether you pop your outfit with shoes, lips, nails, a handbag, or whatever; red is magnificent!  Take my shoes, for instance.  These red patent leather Halogen flats are so pretty and have that Valentino studded look for a fraction of the price.  Sadly, they’re sold out at the moment but you can purchase the heeled version here.   I chose to incorporate other pops of red with Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiery on my lips and China Glaze Ruby Red Pumps on my nails. So tell me, how are you going to rock red this fall…
